Cookie Baking Night 06/27/16

Tonight was Cookie Baking Night. In attendance this evening: Emily, Ethan, Carissa, Alli, and Rylar.
It was birthday choice (she turns 11 in just a few days). For supper she chose: Chicken Alfredo, tator tots, and berries with cream. For her cookie: Dirt Cups.

We also took a walk to the local gas station (Uncle Greg came with us) for an ice cream treat.

For our Bible time tonight, we tried something new: Memorization. We started with Psalm 23. It was disastrous. Concentration was low and attention was wandering. We will regroup and come at it differently next time. God's Word is worth the effort of hiding it in our hearts, so we won't give up that easily (at least this aunt won't).

Despite a few less than warm and fuzzy moments, as usual, a fun time was had by all.

Katrina's Musings (daily blogging)

Let's face it, people. This daily blogging thing is not working out so well. It was, perhaps, an ambitious goal for this particular juncture in life. Again, Cookie Baking Night is looming in the distance, and I'm several posts behind. Knowing I will post about Cookie Baking Night tomorrow, I'm faced with the choice of trying desperately to catch up before tomorrow, employing the "start over" theory I employed two weeks ago, or throwing my hands up in despair and never blogging again. I don't like any of those choices. Time for a revised plan: At least twice a week blogging during this year. I like it! Let's do it. Ahhh, now don't we all feel better? (especially the first born girls out there?)

Resource Musings (Proverbs 31/First 5 App)

A few months ago now, I discovered the Proverbs 31 ministry for women. And through that ministry I found out about the "First 5" app for smart phones or tablets. The First 5 app is a brilliant little Bible study app. The idea is to give your first 5 minutes of the day to God in study of His Word before anything else electronic (or otherwise) grabs your attention. It even has an alarm clock built into it! When I first found out about the app, they were studying Leviticus and Hebrews, then the book of Acts, and now Numbers. It's fast paced, as it goes through a chapter a day. A couple different teachers take turns teaching the lesson each week and on Saturday and Sunday (one lesson for the weekend) the lesson is a video with the teachers of the week recapping the lessons from the prior week. The text is built right into the app to read as well as the cross references. I've found the teaching to be solid and thought provoking. There are study guides available for purchase as well with each new book they start. It's a great supplement to regular Bible reading, and I would highly recommend checking it out.

Tip of the Day (Smoothies)

In our home these days, we're big fans of fruit smoothies (okay, my mom and I are big fans of fruit smoothies, the guys not so much). Here's how we make them:

1 cup frozen fruit of choice (we divide this up ahead of time and keep it in baggies in the freezer).

1 container of yogurt (flavor and variety of choice)

Half cup of water

Pour ingredients into blender and blend at high speed until smooth.

Place in fancy plastic "smoothie" cup with lid and insert fancy "smoothie" straw.

Resource Musings (Women of the Word)

Almost a year ago now, I had the opportunity to hear Jen Wilkin speak at a Revive Our Hearts conference in Indianapolis. She spoke on how to study God's Word. I was surprised how much teaching she was able to do in a two-day conference with such a large group of women (about 2,500) present. The two day teaching was just a taste and left me wanting to hear more of what she had to say. She wrote a book called Women of the Word, which sold out at the conference before I got to it. When I arrived home I purchased it on my Kindle. A few weeks later, I purchased it on and was delighted to discover that the author read it herself. For me, it is to date, the best book I've read on how to study the Bible. My biggest take away from both the conference and the book was to print off a double-spaced copy of the text I am studying (with footnotes and cross references) and use that for my underlining, note writing, and annotating as I study the text. I immediately put that into practice, and it has aided my study tremendously.

I highly recommend this book to you and hope you'll check it out.

Happy Birthday, Greg!

Today is (my husband) Greg's birthday. Phrases or words that describe Greg: Computer whiz, smartest man I know, eternal optimist, patient (the patience he shows with me is the characteristic in him that most makes me want to be like Jesus), funny, interesting, adventurous, one who is rarely found without something on his head at a family gathering (this picture is one of the rare cases where it happens to be a hat).

Happy Birthday, My Love. I praise God for you, and I'm ever so glad you were born!

Tip of the Day (parchment paper) 06/14/16

My favorite baking tip currently is to use parchment paper when baking bars and brownies.

Line the pan with parchment paper then fill the pan with baking ingredients as usual. Bake for the recommended period of time.

When the baking process is done, and the bars or brownies have cooled, remove the entire recipe from the pan by using the paper on the sides as handles. Place on a flat surface and cut into squares. This will allow you to cut the bars without working around the edges of the pan, and nothings sticks to the pan either. Makes for easy clean up.

Cookie Baking Night 06/13/16

Tonight was Cookie Baking Night. In attendance this evening: Ethan, Carissa, Alli, and Rylar.
Tonight was Uncle Greg's birthday choice (his birthday is on Wednesday). For supper, he chose Chicken Pockets and for his cookie he chose Molasses Crinkles.

It was a lively night and time got away from us this evening. We managed to get the cookies baked and read our Bible lesson (Leading Little Ones to God: #32 "Jesus Came From Heaven") and before you knew it, it was time to go. But I assure you, as usual, a fun time was had by all.

Katrina's Musings (starting over and continuing on)

On May 12 (the day this blog turned 7 years old) I made the bold declaration that I am returning to daily blogging for the next year. Today is June 12, and I find myself 15 blog posts behind. Cookie Baking Night is looming in the distance (very close distance -- tomorrow, in fact), and I know I will blog about it. So the first-born-daughter, I-must-do-this-right side of me is saying "you must get caught up on all those blog posts before tomorrow". And another side of me (I'm thinking this is the lazy and defeatist side of me) is saying, "just give up and never blog again". But the practical side of me says "Don't make an idol out of consistency, you could just pick up from here and move forward." Practicality wins. Onward we go, people.
