Cookie Baking Night 02/25/13

Tonight was Cookie Baking Night. In attendance this evening: Ethan and Carissa. In keeping with our 2013 theme of "The Year of the Cookie", tonight we made Deluxe Peanut Butter Cookies. We took a regular peanut cookie recipe and wrapped the dough around a peanut butter cup candy. To finish them off, we drizzeled them with melted chocolate (probably the highlight of the experience for the kids).

Tonight, we read the first lesson from our new book God's Names by Sally Michael. The first name of God we encountered is Elohim meaning Strong Creator. This lesson prompted great discussion about who created the world, how he created it, and what he used to create it. The lesson also provided us with an experiment that allowed us to test the theory of order. The kids really enjoyed this hands-on application and it spurred on great thought and discussion.

I can tell we will learn much about God and his character by studying his names. I'm excited about working our way throug…

Cookie Baking Night 02/11/13

Tonight was Cookie Baking Night. In attendance this evening: Emily. Tonight was Valentine cookie night. We made sugar cookies and frosted them Valentine colors and put little candy bears on them. Emily was in her element.
We also started a new book tonight: God's Names by Sally Michael from the Desiring God ministry of Bethlehem Baptist Church. I read through it a few months ago and really liked it. It teaches about God and his character and nature by teaching through various names of God. I look forward to working through this book with the kids. Tonight we read the introduction.

As usual, a fun time was had by all!

P.S. A Cookie Baking Night alumni stopped over this evening. Joe (Emily's brother) came to pick up Emily at the end of the evening. He's 20 years old now, and it appears he's still growing (he's a little taller every time I see him, 6'3" now, but he's hoping for 6'5"--better jump shot he said).
It was good to see him and catch…

Katrina's Musings (Prayer)

God draws mightily near to the praying soul. To see God, to know God, and to live for God--these form the objective of all true praying. Thus praying is, after all, inspired to seek after God. Prayer-desire is inflamed to see God, to have clearer, fuller, sweeter, and richer revelation of God. So to those who thus pray, the Bible becomes a new Bible, and Christ a new savior, by the light and revelation of the inner chamber.

Katrina's Musings (Quietness)

From the Journal of missionary Jim Elliot as detailed in "Shadow of the Almighty" (pages 112-113). An observation written in the 1940's and just as relevant today.

"'And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.' (Isaiah 32:17 KJV) 'In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.' I think the devil has made it his business to monopolize on three elements: noise, hurry, crowds. If he can keep us hearing radios, gossip, conversation, or even sermons, he is happy. But he will not allow quietness. For he believes Isaiah where we do not. Satan is quite aware of the power of silence. The voice of God, though persistent, is soft...."
